Wenatchee Road Trip Turns Alleged Kidnap Horror Inside Salem Market

What started as a trip out of Wenatchee ended in a downtown Salem market, where a badly injured woman ran for her life and a 42-year-old man landed in jail on kidnapping and assault allegations, according to police.

Salem officers say the man, a Wenatchee resident, kidnapped and assaulted his partner, a 41-year-old woman from the same city, and drove her from Washington to Salem before she escaped. The woman was found with multiple severe injuries inside a downtown business and taken to a Salem hospital. After an investigation, officers arrested the suspect and booked him into the Marion County Jail.

From Wenatchee to a frantic dash into a Salem market

As reported by KOIN, Salem police investigators say the ordeal began in Wenatchee, where the suspect, identified as Michael Knabe, allegedly forced his partner into a vehicle and headed south. Knabe faces charges including first-degree kidnapping and second-degree assault, according to investigators.

Police say the victim eventually bolted into the Central Market on Center Street NE, seeking help from employees and customers. Officers found her at the store and transported her to a local hospital for treatment of what they described as multiple severe injuries. Detectives followed up on leads that they say ultimately pointed them to Knabe, who was taken into custody in Salem.

Domestic violence advocate steps in as community reacts

Salem police say a domestic violence advocate is now working with the woman to line up temporary housing and connect her with support services.
