Lake Oswego boys polo drops Newberg 9-6

This was a big one.

It was No. 1 vs. No. 2.

It was the new king vs. the old king.

It was the immovable object vs. the irresistible force.

In the end, the Lake Oswego boys water polo team asserted its dominance by beating Newberg 9-6 on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Lake Oswego School District Pool.

“We were preparing for this game all week,” said Lake Oswego senior Henry Saur, who led his team with four goals. “At practice, we were just non-stop preparing for this and just grinding, grinding it out.”

“We’ve been practicing the shallow end a little bit more and I think we’re definitely reaping the rewards from that and it feels good,” said Laker junior Sullevan Kirtz, who added two goals in the win.

“It’s always great to beat Newberg,” added LO senior Kane Saur, who finished with three goals on Wednesday. “We know we’re better than them and we like our position at number one. That’s where we like to be.”

With the victory, the top-ranked Lakers’ second straight, Lake Oswego won the Three Rivers League for the fourth straight time, currently with an 8-0 TRL record and a 24-4 overall mark. It also extended LO’s TRL winning streak to 38 games with two games left to play in 2024. Next up, the Lakers will host Tigard at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at Lake Oswego School District Pool.
