Seniors Leo Pausch and Lukas Hernandez ran to a 1-2 finish in the 3,000 meters to headline Philomath High School’s performance at the John Oliver Invitational Saturday at Central High School in Independence.
Pausch crossed in 9 minutes, 6.96 seconds with Hernandez less than 2 seconds behind at 9:08.49. The pair accounted for the Warriors’ only top finishes in the distance events against a field that included South Salem, Corvallis, McNary, Thurston and Springfield, among others.
Junior Kaden Howard’s highlight of the day occurred in the long jump with a second-place finish following a personal-best 22 feet, 2.5 inches. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño earned a podium finish in the high jump, clearing 6-0 for second place. He also ran a personal-best 51.68 for third in the 400 .
In the throws, junior Jamin Peters placed third in the discus with a personal-best 142-6. Senior Josiah Peters was runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 175-6, finishing behind McNary junior Derek Olivo, who won all three throwing events…
