Vietnam veteran struggling with PTSD and hoarding fights to save SLC home and pet chickens

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Vietnam War veteran is getting a new look on life after accepting help from some friends as he faces possibly losing his home because of hoarding conditions.

Patrick Perry is a Vietnam War Veteran who is still suffering from PTSD and anxiety from his time in the war, a disability he says is recognized by Veteran’s Affairs (VA). Over time, the pressure from his disability built and ultimately contributed to severe clutter and hoarding conditions. Now, Pat says that Salt Lake City is requiring him to make significant improvements to his living area or else he faces losing his home.

“I feel like a helter skelter person, is the best way to describe it,” Pat said.

Pat says that in addition to potentially condemning his home, he could also lose the thing that bring him the most peace and comfort: his chickens.

Couple Russ and Cymony Koehler could not stand back without offering their assistance. Over the course of several weeks, the Koehler’s spent countless hours clearing debris and garbage, organizing the property, and restoring the yard and home. They said their efforts resulted in them being able to “physically see the stress beginning to lift from Pat’s shoulders.”…
