Fifth grader helps pay off school lunch debt at Kearns charter school

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — School lunch debt in Utah is expected to surpass $4 million this year, according to the founder of a nonprofit working to pay off meal balances for students across the state.

DJ Bracken, founder and executive director of the Utah Lunch Debt Relief Foundation, said the amount of unpaid school lunch debt has continued to climb since he started the foundation in 2024.

“When I started in 2024, the debt was $2.8 million, something that sounded absolutely ridiculous to me at the time,” Bracken said. “And now, two years later, the problem has just been getting worse. We’re actually going to see more than $4 million in debt this year.”…
