San Antonio councilwoman wants to rename street after drag performer Erica Andrews

With Pride Month underway, District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur this week filed a proposal to rename a portion of North Main Avenue — the primary thoroughfare through the city’s Pride District — after the late drag performer Erica Andrews.

“This designation is about highlighting an important part of San Antonio’s history,” Kaur said in a statement. “Erica Andrews was not only a groundbreaking performer on the international stage; she was a mentor, a community builder, and a source of visibility and pride for generations of LGBTQ+ individuals in San Antonio and beyond.”

Andrews, who died in 2013 at age 43, lived in San Antonio between 1992 and 2012 and was a well-known figure in the city’s LGBTQ+ community. In 2006, the Mexico-born Andrews was named Miss International Drag Queen Thailand and was the “matriarch” of the Andrews drag family, which includes two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, Roxxxy Andrews…
