Retail giant Walmart pours $8M into fast-growing Texas Hill Country town

Millions of dollars are headed to one of New Braunfels’ biggest warehouses.

Walmart plans to spend $8 million upgrading part of its sprawling Interstate 35 distribution center, according to newly filed state records, marking another major investment by the retail giant in one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. A construction filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) shows Walmart intends to renovate nearly 97,000 square feet inside its distribution center at 3900 N. Interstate 35 Frontage Road in New Braunfels.

The project, dubbed “Warehouse PH5 Remodel,” calls for the installation of new material-handling equipment, electrical upgrades, fire suppression improvements and updates to compressed-air systems. Construction is expected to begin in August and continue through September 2027. All TDLR filings are subject to change without notice.

While shoppers may never see the upgrades, the upgrades are aimed at the behind-the-scenes operation that helps keep Walmart stores stocked across the region. According to state records, the work will be privately funded and completed on private property. The renovation is classified as an alteration project rather than a new building expansion.

New Braunfels has seen a wave of warehouse and industrial development in recent years, particularly along the Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio.
