Retiring Northside ISD superintendent’s departure remains in flux

Trustees of San Antonio’s largest school district took no action this week on their superintendent’s plan to retire nearly four years before his contract expires.

The Northside Independent School District board discussed a “voluntary retirement agreement” for Superintendent John Craft behind closed doors Tuesday night but didn’t bring it up in open session when they returned to the board room, even though it was posted on the agenda. Craft, 49, announced retirement plans last week; his contract runs through April 22, 2030.

Craft, a former Killeen ISD superintendent, began working at Northside in April 2023 under a three-year contract. His employment agreement was last extended in April 2025 to run through 2030. The board had planned to discuss his annual evaluation and contract in a May 26 executive session, which is closed to the public…
