San Antonio neighbors start fundraiser to save icehouse from closure

On June 24, Kent Oliver, owner of The Dakota East Side Ice House, announced that the beloved neighborhood watering hole will close later this year. Less than a week later, neighbors of the icehouse are banding together to save the business.

San Antonio resident April Pantheress Winn is leading the charge to save The Dakota by starting a GoFundMe to raise money for the cherished Eastside staple. The GoFundMe’s goal is $13,000, and as of Wednesday, July 1, more than $4,500 has been donated.

“Kent is a great guy — he’s too proud to ask for help, but he agreed to let us move forward with this fundraiser,” Winn wrote in the GoFundMe.

Oliver previously set August 9 as The Dakota’s final day, revealing in a news release that he decided not to renew the lease after eight years of operation. However, the business owner appears to be on board with the GoFundMe efforts, posting the link on the icehouse’s Facebook profile…
