City says it needs more shelter beds, rent aid to curb homelessness

The city of San Antonio is short hundreds of shelter beds and needs to increase how much it puts into rental assistance to prevent more people from becoming homeless, according to Mark Carmona, the city’s chief housing officer.

Though more than a dozen nonprofit organizations provide 2,700 beds across the city, the new Homeless Services and Strategy Department estimates 550 more are needed. Carmona also said 1,738 people need rental assistance to prevent them from living on the streets.

In addition, he said there’s a need for hundreds more housing vouchers and “permanent supportive housing” units, which provide both living quarters and support services for people with disabilities or who are chronically homeless…
