SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A vegetation fire in Mission Valley prompted a large emergency response and road closure Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 9000 block of Friars Road shortly before 1:30 p.m.
San Diego police said Friars Road is closed in the area, particularly east of Fenton Parkway, as crews work to contain the flames. It’s unclear how long the road closure will remain in place.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area altogether due to the heavy emergency response, including several fire and police vehicles.

In an update around 2:20 p.m., officials reported that the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 2 acres. Crews remain on the scene. A spot fire was reported about 400 yards away from the original fire, prompting crews to redispatch a helicopter to monitor the flames.
