Pacific Beach DUI Chase Ends in Smash-Up, Young Passenger Left Gravely Hurt

Last Friday in Pacific Beach ended with a mangled car, a severely injured passenger, and a driver in handcuffs after what police describe as a brief chase that started in a Vons parking lot and spilled onto Garnet Avenue.

San Diego police say the incident began around 7:30 PM in the 2400 block of Garnet Avenue, where a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 was reportedly driving erratically in the supermarket lot, according to NBC 7 San Diego. When officers moved in, the Mercedes took off eastbound on Garnet, then slammed into a 2020 Hyundai Veloster.

The collision disabled both vehicles. A 24-year-old passenger in the Hyundai was rushed to a hospital with multiple fractured vertebrae. Police said the Mercedes driver, described as a 39-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing injury and felony evading. Officers also suspect he was under the influence of narcotics, though they have not said which substance, NBC 7 San Diego reported.
