Mayer Takes Blame for Massive 25-Car Pileup at Naval Base Coronado

CORONADO, Calif. — A devastating 25-car pileup on Lap 36 brought Saturday’s United Rentals Driven to Serve 250 to a grinding halt, and Sam Mayer was quick to shoulder the blame for the chaos at Naval Base Coronado.

Mayer, driving the Audibel Chevrolet for the Haas Factory Team, triggered the field-clearing wreck after an aggressive move on a restart backfired. The crash collected a massive portion of the starting grid, leaving a trail of mangled race cars and frustrated crews in its wake.

“First off, I just want to say sorry to everybody in the field,” a visibly upset Mayer said after the crash. “I’m looking at the people who are involved in the crash and it’s literally everybody. So, just sorry to all the people that have to put work in now because of my mistake.”…
