Warm ocean water draws beach crowds as scientists track rising sea-surface temperatures

The ocean water off La Jolla Shores is feeling warmer than usual this summer, with sea-surface temperatures near Scripps Pier reaching about 74 degrees, according to measurements taken Thursday morning. Scientists say while the reading isn’t the highest they’ve seen, the average is typically around the upper 60s.

As the temperature of the air has been heating up, so has the water off the coast.
