Humane Society offering free microchips, helpful tips ahead of Fourth of July

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) is putting your pets first this Fourth of July, as shelters across the county are offering free microchipping ahead of the bustling weekend, in addition to tips on how to prepare pets for loud fireworks and festivities.

According to SDHS, more pets go missing during the Fourth of July than any other time of year, as pets frightened by fireworks may flee their homes. Last year, 253 stray pets came to SDHS between July 4 and 7, and only 84 were reclaimed.

SDHS is urging pet owners to act now to keep their pets safe and cozy on the Fourth of July and to obtain proper identification to reunite with missing pets quickly.

Tips on how to prepare your pet:

  • Make sure they’re microchipped: Microchips provide permanent identification that can protect pets for life. SDHS campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, and San Diego will offer free microchips from June 26 through July 3. Scheduling an appointment is encouraged, but walk-ins will also not be charged.
  • Remember a collar and tags: Ensure pets wear a current ID tag with up-to-date contact information. In a pinch, writing a phone number directly on a pet’s collar with a permanent ink can help.
  • Ensure your pet is licensed: Dog licenses are required by law and serve as additional identification that can help reunite lost dogs with their families. Those within SDHS’s jurisdiction can renew or obtain a dog license online.
  • Calming medication: If a pet experiences anxiety during fireworks, pet owners should consult a veterinarian now to discuss whether calming medication may help and to ensure they have it on hand before the holiday.
  • Stay home and keep pets inside: The safest place for pets during fireworks is indoors with you or a pet sitter. Never leave pets outside, even in a fenced yard, as frightened animals may dig, jump or push their way out to escape the noise.
  • Create a safe space: Set up a quiet area indoors away from noise and bright lights. Secure windows and doors, close blinds, cover crates if appropriate and play calming music or white noise to reduce stress.

If a pet becomes lost, community members can text “LOST” to 858-SAN-LOST for guidance. Additionally, pet owners are encouraged to check SDHS’s Lost Pets webpage to view animals brought to its shelters…
