This craft brewery once sold for $1 billion. Its taproom in S.F.’s hottest neighborhood has closed

Ballast Point Brewing Company, the San Diego-based craft brewery that was once purchased for a reported $1 billion, closed its San Francisco brewpub in booming Mission Bay on Monday.

“We’re grateful to everyone who visited, shared a beer, celebrated milestones, and made this location part of the local craft beer community over the years. Thank you for your support and for the memories we’ve made together,” an Instagram post announcing the closure reads. A Ballast Point spokesperson declined to comment.

It is the latest Bay Area brewery to close amid the headwinds impacting the U.S. beer industry, including a 90-year-low in alcohol consumption and younger consumers shunning booze.
