High surf impacts train tracks between San Diego and Orange County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Heavy surf up and down the coast has been damaging communication lines for trains running between San Diego and Orange County.

A combination of south swells and larger than normal hightides have been eroding part of the gravel ballast under the tracks just south of the San Clemente Pier, shutting down a handful of Metrolink and Pacific Surfliner trains over the weekend while emergency repairs were made.

San Diego State University geology professor Pat Abbott said these recent problems are just a forerunner for the real troubles to come…
