CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A trash compactor caught fire and spread flames into nearby brush at Otay Valley Regional Park Wednesday morning, prompting a response from firefighters.

The blaze was reported shortly after 11 a.m. near 4th Avenue and Beyer Way.
According to Chula Vista Fire Department Capt. Eric Martinez, a Conservation Corps crew was cleaning up homeless encampments in the park when the trash compactor on one of their vehicles caught fire. The flames then spread into surrounding vegetation.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire had grown to approximately 100 feet by 100 feet and was burning at a moderate rate of spread.
