SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The county is closing three parks in August as summer temperatures continue to rise in San Diego.
Where to beat the summer heat and dangerous beach conditions
The closures include El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower Preserve in Ramona. They add to the summer closures of Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park.
Beyond protecting parkgoers from record-breaking heat, the county said in a news release that the closures also help Park and Recreation complete maintenance projects and trail restoration.
Officials urge people to take extra precautions if they choose to hike during the warm summer months. Here are some safety tips:
- Opt for safer routes if temperatures are high and choose trails suited to your fitness level
- Stay hydrated
- Hike with others; never go alone
- Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return
- Bring food, sunscreen, water, a flashlight, first-aid kit, multipurpose tool and whistle
- Carry at least one liter of water for every two to three miles, or more for strenuous hikes
- Dress in light-colored, loose, breathable layers
- Wear steady shoes with grip
- Follow safety rules posted on the trail map
If you decide to take a pet with you, here are some tips on how you can keep them safe as well:
- Avoid bringing them if temperatures are too high
- Carry plenty of water for your pet
- Be wary of hot pavement, which can burn paws
- Never leave a dog or pet in the car on an 85-degree or hotter day — interior temps can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes
