Frustrations grow at town hall over ‘Midway Rising’ redevelopment project

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX5/KUSI) — Community members who spent months asking for a town hall on the controversial Midway Rising project say they left the long-awaited meeting frustrated, claiming it felt more like a campaign event than an opportunity for public dialogue.

“We were hoping to have a dialog with the state senator and the developer. That didn’t happen,” said Margaret Virissimo of San Diego United Communities.

Groups opposed to the project say the event was dominated by organized labor supporters and State Sen. Akilah Weber-Pierson, who is backing Senate Bill 958, legislation that would streamline portions of the approval process for the Midway Rising development…
