The toilet in the hall bathroom is the one the house came with: tall tank, heavy lid, a flush that still clears the bowl the first time. When the new vanity and tile went in, it stayed, because nothing was wrong with it.

That is the belief: a fixture that works stays. In California, working is not the test for a house built on or before January 1, 1994. The test is how much water the toilet was made to use per flush, and a permitted remodel is where somebody checks.
