San Diego’s “Cornbread Guy” dishes up southern comfort food that tastes like cake

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego man who spent decades in engineering and education has found his true calling in retirement: making cornbread so good that it rivals dessert.

Darrell McClendon, known around the farmer’s markets as the “Cornbread Guy,” operates MC’s Kitchen, a pop-up food business that has generated a devoted following since launching about a year ago. The venture came after McClendon retired from a career that included directing engineering at Motorola and serving the San Diego education system for decades as a teacher and administrator.

“I’ll just tell you what I’ll tell people. One, if you try it, you might forget other cornbreads,” McClendon said of his signature item.
