San Diego – A violent confrontation in a downtown parking lot escalated quickly when a suspect struck a parking attendant with a broken wooden cane. Officers responded to the scene and faced a non-compliant individual who ignored repeated commands. The deployment of a police dog ultimately brought the standoff to a decisive end, allowing authorities to take the man into custody without further harm.[1][2]
Unprovoked Attack Shocks Parking Lot Worker
The incident began around 3:42 p.m. on a Sunday in the Tailgate Padres Parking Lot near K Street and 13th Street. A 25-year-old parking attendant sat on an electrical box when the suspect approached without warning. He used the sharp, broken handle of a wooden cane to strike the victim twice in the head, causing lacerations.[1][3]
Paramedics transported the attendant to UCSD Hospital, where medical staff treated his injuries. Fortunately, the wounds proved non-life-threatening, and he received care before release. The sudden assault highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by workers in public spaces like parking lots.[2]
Officers Confront Armed and Agitated Suspect
Police tracked the suspect to a nearby sidewalk along Park Boulevard, where more than a dozen officers formed a perimeter around him. The 20-year-old man clutched a roughly six-foot wooden stick, believed to be part of the same cane used in the attack. He paced restlessly and refused all orders to drop the weapon.[1]
Authorities issued multiple verbal commands, but the suspect remained defiant. Officers then fired several non-lethal rounds, including bean-bag projectiles, in an effort to subdue him. Despite at least three such impacts, he stayed on his feet and continued to pose a threat.[3][2]
Police Dog Charges into Action
With less-lethal options exhausted, officers unleashed their K-9 unit. The dog sprinted toward the suspect at full speed, undeterred by the man’s attempts to swing the stick at it. Video footage captured the intense moment as the canine latched onto the suspect’s arm, knocking him off balance.[1]…
