SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — One of San Diego’s most photographed natural spectacles is set to return this weekend as the “Scrippshenge” sunset perfectly aligns between the support beams of Scripps Pier in La Jolla.

The rare phenomenon is expected to occur on the evenings of May 2 and May 3, when the setting sun will appear centered between the pilings of the iconic pier, creating a glowing, symmetrical frame over the Pacific Ocean.
“Scrippshenge” happens just twice a year — typically in early May and again in August — drawing crowds of photographers, sunset chasers and curious onlookers to La Jolla Shores.
While the alignment itself only lasts a few minutes, it has become a must-see spectacle in recent years, with beachgoers often arriving hours early to secure an ideal spot in the sand.
