Orphaned coyote flown from San Diego to new home on East Coast

RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — An orphaned coyote pup that was rescued in San Diego County on Valentine’s Day has found a new home on the East Coast.

The pup, affectionately referred to as the “Valentine’s Day coyote” or “Val,” was the first coyote admitted to the San Diego Humane Society’s (SDHS) Project Wildlife program after being found along a creek in Valley Center.

The female pup was taken to SDHS by a concerned community member after her mother did not return.

Experts believe Val was born in late December, which is rare for the typical coyote breeding season. Most coyotes are born between January and March, according to SDHS.

Caregivers revisited the site where she was found to look for evidence of a den or siblings, but found nothing that indicated she should remain in the wild, according to SDHS.

After spending a week at the Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center, experts determined Val would not be able to survive on her own in the wild. They decided to transfer the pup to a licensed wildlife facility where she would be an ambassador for her species…
