East County mom celebrates first Mother’s Day with triplets born from a rare 1 in 100,000 pregnancy

SAN DIEGO — Mikayla Toney always knew motherhood would change her life. She just didn’t know it would change three times over.

The 20-year-old East County woman is celebrating her first Mother’s Day this Sunday with 14-week-old triplet daughters Hazel, Sutton and Everett, born from one of the rarest pregnancies in medicine.

Toney’s pregnancy is classified as spontaneous monochorionic triamniotic, meaning three naturally conceived babies shared a single placenta. No fertility drugs were involved, and multiples do not run in either parent’s family. The condition occurs in roughly one out of every 100,000 pregnancies…
