A Bay Area grandfather was a spy for the U.S. His remarkable life inspired a new novel

David Baerwald played bass in a 1970s Los Angeles punk band, recorded a radio hit in the ’80s, was nominated for a Grammy in 1994 and cowrote a song featured in the 2001 movie “Moulin Rouge!”(cq)

For his first book, he could’ve written a cracking memoir. But as Baerwald readily admits, he’s not even the most interesting person in his own family.

That title goes to his grandfather, Ernst Baerwald, whose remarkable experiences inspired David’s debut novel “The Fire Agent.”…
