SF cocktail pro to bring Shanghai all-day cafe vibes to the Mission

Angela Cao really likes dogs. She was born in Shanghai but grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she was surrounded by animals — cats, horses, birds, and dogs. Now she lives in SoMa and owns a Pomeranian named Merlin and a golden retriever named Chicken. Next month, she’s opening a cafe and bar in their honor. “I thought it would be cute,” Cao says.

Stray Dog opens July 1 at 2545 24th St., in the former home of the Junior cocktail bar. The name is a not-so-subtle nod to Cao’s first bar, Lost Cat Bar & Bites (opens in new tab), on Polk Street near Union Square. With the sophomore effort, Cao is taking inspiration from Shanghainese all-day cafes — and from Merlin for the logo, a black-and-white drawing of a fluffy, smiling pooch…
