Alert Issued as West Oakland Blaze Sends Smoke Into Emeryville

Emeryville residents began reporting smoky air around 9 p.m. Saturday as a fire burned on an abandoned railway trestle and nearby vegetation in West Oakland, near the EBMUD wastewater treatment plant.

Oakland firefighters were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. to the area of West Grand Avenue and Wake Avenue, where the fire was burning on the old trestle and surrounding vegetation near the EBMUD property.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire’s forward progress and prevent it from spreading to structures. Embers did ignite several spot fires in the EBMUD yard, however, according to Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Meineke. The wastewater treatment plant itself was not threatened…
