From Hollywood’s Magic Castle to Marin County: A Legendary Music Man’s Legacy Lives On Through His Daughter

For Rachel Bourne, music has always been a family affair. “Some of my earliest memories of music come with a little bit of magic attached,” says Rachel. 

Her father, Professor David E. Bourne, spent an extraordinary 48 years as the resident pianist at Hollywood’s legendary Magic Castle. Growing up around magicians, entertainers, and celebrities who passed through the Castle, Rachel watched her dad play everything from jazz standards, ragtime, and classical masterpieces to pop classics, often bringing a room to life with whatever tune the moment called for.

“I didn’t realize it at the time, but those Sundays spent at the Castle were shaping the musician and teacher I would eventually become.”

After 28 years of teaching, Rachel has found a new home in Sausalito and a new focus: working with adults and retirees who may be returning to the piano after decades away or picking it up for the first time…
