Higher-Than-Normal Amounts of Black Tar Cover Parts of the South Coast, Officials Blame Natural Seeps

Abnormal amounts of tar and oil have washed onto the shore at some sections in Carpinteria, worrying people about the blackened water.

Some areas along the South Coast, including parts of Carpinteria, have been experiencing “higher than normal” rates of oil and tar in the ocean and along the shoreline, the City of Carpinteria said in its beach alert shared on social media on July 16.

The tar was attributed to natural causes and not to any drilling operations…
