An invasive insect that threatens vineyards in California was detected on plant shipments delivered to Costco locations across California’s Wine Country, agriculture officials announced Tuesday.
Glassy-winged sharpshooters spread Pierce’s disease, which is a bacterial infection that can often be fatal to grapevines, the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office said. They can also damage citrus, almond and residential backyard plants.

The pest was detected on shipments of grapevines and citrus plants from Burchell Nursery, Inc. in Fresno County to Costco store locations in Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Marin counties, according to officials. The affected plants were received at Costco stores between April 21 and May 26.
“Costco is directly contacting members who purchased plants within the timeframe and has been a cooperative partner with all County Ag Commissioners,” Napa County officials wrote.
Officials said Tuesday that 157 of the 220 grapevines delivered to Costco Wholesale in Napa County from Burchell Nursery remain unaccounted for and “may be in the possession of community members who purchased them.” It is unknown how many grapevines were delivered to Costco locations in other counties…
