Photos: Funnel cloud forms over Tomales Bay

(KRON) — April showers bring … funnel clouds? Weather watchers and meteorologists reported funnel clouds forming over the Bay Area Tuesday as a rainstorm drenched the region.

“Active 24 hours for NorCal! Confirmed funnel cloud near Milpitas,” the National Weather Service wrote.

Up in Marin County, Gage Vogler was fishing near Dillon Beach when he photographed a funnel cloud forming over Tomales Bay around noon.

Funnel clouds are made up of water droplets and a rotating column of air that extends downward from storm clouds, according to NOAA. “If it is in contact with the ground it is a tornado; otherwise it is a funnel cloud,” NOAA wrote.

The NWS said it tracked 11,705 total lightning strikes Tuesday, with over 1,400 striking the ground. Most of the lightning formed from thunderstorms rolling through the Central Valley and Sierra Foothills…
