DoorDash Theft Tip Sets Off Wild Santa Rosa Police Chase

Last Saturday night, food delivery in downtown Santa Rosa turned into a full-scale police pursuit after a DoorDash driver reported his car stolen. Officers chased the vehicle through nearby neighborhoods, eventually boxing it in after the driver allegedly rammed two marked police cars. Several patrol vehicles took moderate damage, but police said no officers were hurt. The driver was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked.

How the Chase Unfolded

According to The Press Democrat, the trouble started around 10 p.m. when a DoorDash driver reported his vehicle stolen near 515 4th Street. Officers quickly spotted the car, but when they tried to pull it over, the driver took off, kicking off a pursuit through surrounding neighborhoods.

During the chase, the suspect allegedly rammed two marked police vehicles, and multiple patrol units ended up with moderate damage. Officers set up spike strips at exits from the area and methodically closed in until they were able to box the vehicle in and bring the pursuit to an end, authorities said.

Why Pursuits Escalate

Police chases often start the way this one did, with what begins as a stolen-vehicle call or a simple traffic stop that suddenly turns into a pursuit. Data from the California Highway Patrol shows that stolen vehicles and speeding are among the most common violations that spark pursuits, and about 72.8 percent of those incidents end within five miles.

The CHP report also notes that pursuits with air support are more likely to end in arrests. That pattern played out locally when the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office provided helicopter assistance during Saturday night’s response.

Suspect, Booking and Past Arrests

Police identified the driver as Sergio Villalobos-Espinoza. He was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance, then booked into Sonoma County Jail on four charges, including suspicion of vehicle theft and felony evasion, as reported by The Press Democrat. Authorities said Villalobos-Espinoza has at least 13 prior arrests for vehicle theft in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Prosecutors are expected to review the case once officers complete their investigation…
