Injured fisherman airlifted from Gulf

A commercial fishing boat captain was medevaced to Tampa General Hospital Tuesday after suffering a hand injury while hauling line approximately 122 miles west of Longboat Key, Fla.

The 56-year-old man was hoisted to safety by a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew after watchstanders at Sector St. Petersburg received a medevac request and determined he required a higher level of care.

A rescue swimmer deployed from the aircraft assessed the captain’s condition before using a rescue basket to bring him aboard. He was then transported to Tampa General Hospital…
