Storm knocks out power, causes bad smell in Effingham County

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Effingham County’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) issued a special advisory Sunday night for a low cloud with an odor near Springfield.

The EMA said an oxidizer malfunctioned at DRT America after thunderstorms caused a widespread power outage. The plant’s primary thermal oxidizer went offline, and an industrial odor “has become significant across the area,” according to a post by the EMA on social media.

They said a backup oxidizer is now running, and the primary oxidizer will be fully working again once power is restored to the area…
