Frog Rock officially recognized as a Washington state landmark

Bainbridge Island’s amphibian-inspired attraction “Frog Rock” is now recognized as an official state landmark.

On Sept. 15, the green boulder at the intersection of Madison Avenue North and Phelps Road was approved to join the Washington Heritage Register, an official list that displays historically significant sites found throughout the state by the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation.

The island spectacle features a large glacial boulder painted by high school sweethearts Bob Green and Ellen Barnes on the night of June 7, 1971. Years later, a smaller boulder was painted to look like a ladybug beside Frog Rock, completing the iconic duo that island locals have maintained for over five decades…
