3 airmen honored by Red Cross for saving man’s life after wreck in Bossier City

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KSLA) – Three airmen were honored by the American Red Cross Friday, May 29 for saving a man’s life after a car wreck in Bossier City earlier this year.

“Their heroism reflects the highest ideals of service, compassion, and readiness that define both the U.S. Air Force and the American Red Cross,” said a representative with the Red Cross.

Back on Feb. 19, Staff Sergeant Martin Schortye, Senior Airman Danny Gonzalez, and Senior Airman Joe Jimenez came upon a major car wreck while on patrol along Barksdale Boulevard in Bossier City. Schortye immediately called for help from EMS when he discovered the man involved had a serious head wound. He managed to keep the victim responsive and calm, the Red Cross says.

Gonzalez and Jimenez showed up just moments later with emergency medical supplies. Working together, the three airmen were able to stabilize the victim’s head and neck, and apply gauze and pressure to the wound to control the bleeding until paramedics arrived.
