Dry & hot through Saturday; storms return on Sunday

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The sunshine that we have experienced over the past couple of days will continue. Thunderstorms will likely return to much of the ArkLaTex on Sunday and continue through the middle of next week.

The heat goes on: Thanks to a much warmer start this morning, temperatures Thursday afternoon are running several degrees warmer than on Wednesday. Highs today will end up in the mid to upper 90s. Expect similar temperatures for the next few days. Lows on Friday morning will be in the mid to upper 70s. Daytime highs on Friday afternoon will likely return to the mid to upper 90s. The heat index could approach 105 degrees.

The sunshine continues: Upper-level high pressure is now controlling our weather and will continue to keep us dry. Futurecast shows that we will see a clear to partly cloudy sky on Thursday night and plenty of sunshine on Friday. Expect a few more clouds on Friday night and a mix of sunshine and clouds on Saturday. Futurecast does show a few spotty thundershowers on Saturday afternoon, but rain chances will be less than 20%.

Storms return on Sunday: The upper ridge will develop far enough to the north that a few scattered storms will likely return to much of the ArkLaTex on Sunday. While severe weather is looking unlikely, a few storms could produce some strong winds. The threat of rain will likely continue through Wednesday. Rainfall projections have decreased some since yesterday. The Blend of Models above shows that we will likely see 1 to 2″ of rain over the southern third of the ArkLaTex, with amounts less than 1” over the rest of the area. Individual hi-res models like Futurecast below show that some locations could receive two to up to five inches from now through Monday. While the strongest storms will likely produce some strong winds of 30 to 40 mph, severe weather is not expected.

Long-range outlook: When it’s not raining, it will be hot. Daytime highs will be in the mid to upper 90s. It will be somewhat cooler from Sunday through Wednesday, with highs in the lower 90s. Overnight lows during the next ten days will remain in the middle 70s.
