SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — We have now crossed the threshold into the second half of August, and it seems as though several aspects of the first half of the month will try to carry over into this part.
We’ll start with what we’ll see in the skies above KELOLAND. Showers and some storms were seen yesterday in parts of the region, and we’ll likely see that develop again later in the day if you’re in central and western KELOLAND.
A “Marginal Risk” for severe weather covers a good portion of the aforementioned areas, with the northwest corner being an exception. Wind and hail are the main concerns with any storm that comes along.
It won’t be the last time we talk about a chance for stronger storms. In fact, we do it all over again on Monday. This time, it’s for both sides of the river as another disturbance moves through.
A “Slight Risk” covers southern and southeastern KELOLAND, with a “Marginal Risk” in place from Pine Ridge to Pierre and over to Huron, Watertown, and Sisseton. Wind and hail, again, are the main concerns, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out to the south and east. Keep an eye on the skies if you have any outdoor plans.
Tuesday’s risk for storms is a bit conditional in nature, as it hinges on what we do or do not get on Monday. If Monday has a good amount of action, then the atmosphere may not have enough time to recharge before Tuesday. With that said, though, we’ll at least keep that chance in place for showers and storms through the day.
A “Marginal Risk” covers southern and southeastern KELOLAND near and south of I-90, with a “Slight Risk” for extreme southeastern KELOLAND…including the Yankton/Vermillion/Rock Valley, IA area. Wind and hail are the main concerns.
Shower and storm chances linger into Wednesday and Thursday, though the severe threat as of now is not as high. This will still be a good sight where drought conditions remain on the stronger side of the scale. We’ll try to dry out by the end of the week and into the weekend, where temperatures also rise back into the mid to at times upper 80s.
