Spring freezes so far in KELOLAND

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Throughout this week, frost and freeze headlines dominated in KELOLAND as below average temperatures lingered.

It was a cool start to our Thursday in KELOLAND as lows dropped into the 20s and 30s. We like to keep a close eye on these kinds of temperatures during the spring months because they can impact our growing season.

During the first month of Meteorological Spring, locations in KELOLAND typically see around 24 to 28 days with lows at or below 32 degrees. This year, areas like Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City fell short of their averages but they made up for it.

Both Pierre and Rapid City ended up exceeding their averages by seven days in April. It was quite the rollercoaster of temperatures for Pierre as its low on April 10 was 16 degrees but then the next day they went on to climb to a high of 80.

As average temperatures continue to warm up into May, the amount of days with freezing lows drops drastically. It did not take much though for us to already meet the average. Besides one day this month, Sioux Falls has only had below average lows.

There is good news as we head into the rest of the week. We will get out of frost and freeze territory with our lows and it looks like this will continue through at least mid-May…
