Spokane Regional Health District’s new top boss wants to repair relationships after years of turnover

Over the last seven years, the Spokane Regional Health District has hired three administrative officers — the top boss at the health agency, which tracks communicable diseases, provides medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder, monitors health standards at dining and drinking establishments, and more.

Things did not end well with the last two administrative officers. Amelia Clark, who started in the position in September 2019, resigned by September 2022 amid a state investigation of her firing of the district’s health officer during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. After a year of interim leadership, the local health board hired Alicia Thompson to the role in December 2023, but required her to resign by September 2025, citing performance concerns.
