Spokane County, city, and airport submit plan to provide clean water, more testing of ‘forever chemicals’ in West Plains water

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — The Spokane International Airport, the City of Spokane and Spokane County submitted a plan to the Washington State Department of Ecology on how the three entities will work to provide access to clean drinking water, as well as start additional testing of private wells in the West Plains for PFAS, known as “forever chemicals.”

Ecology has named all three as “Potentially Liable Persons” due to a PFAS investigation into the airport, Spokane County said in a press release Friday. The Department of Ecology set a requirement to implement “interim actions in an Ecology-defined area primarily to the north and east of the airport,” the county said.

The plan focuses first on clean water. The three partners are aiming to provide access to clean drinking water for property owners and tenants who currently get their water from privates wells. This will impact up to 900 people, according to Spokane County…
