SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools leaders said during a budget discussion that falling enrollment, uncertain state support and levy timing could shape major staffing and financial decisions in the coming months.
District staff said enrollment through May continued to dip slightly, though they said the trend was not far off from prior years. They also showed a four-year forecast with a deficit of about $2.5 million in the current planning outlook and warned that a temporary boost in local effort assistance would not continue at the same level.
Staff said the district was already at the $2.50-per-$1,000 cap for its levy and collects about 15% of its revenue from that source. They said the current EP&O levy expires after 2027 and a new levy would need voter approval for the district to collect in 2028…
