SPD and SPS team up for enhanced school safety

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — As students across Springfield return to the classroom, Springfield Public Schools (SPS), Springfield Police Department (SPD) and Greene County Sheriff’s Office are partnering on a new safety campaign aimed at protecting children as they travel to and from school.

For the first few weeks of school, SPD will be conducting enforcement, ensuring that both drivers and pedestrians comply.

“We are doing crosswalk enforcement for both pedestrians and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk,” said Lt. Steve Schwind. “SPS has given their locations where some of their drivers have seen frequent stop-arm violations. So, we are watching for those and also those school zones that are prone to having drivers speed through those zones.”…
