Hickory Hills dad talks about extent of injuries daughter suffered during school assault

A Springfield father said his daughter has continued to suffer from serious injuries sustained during a Jan. 17 assault at Hickory Hills Middle School.

In a Tuesday interview, Derick Moore said his daughter was leaving the gym, where students often gather after lunch until the bell rings for the next class period, on the day she was attacked from behind by three fellow students. The three were taken into custody by law enforcement at the scene.

“They hit her in the back of the head, got her down to the ground, pulled her hair and continued to bash her face in the ground, all the while kicking on her face, her neck, her head multiple times. This went on for a while,” Moore said. “One of the girls, while it was happening, was recording it herself for whatever reason. We think that may be a little bit of the motive.”

Moore said in addition to being “stomped,” the three girls pulled “fists full of hair … out of her head while they were bashing it up against the ground.”

The 14-year-old was rushed to the emergency room at Cox South hospital. After an initial evaluation and treatment, she has required additional care.
