A storm or two possible southeast of Springfield today

Rain and thunderstorms yesterday produced clusters of severe weather, resulting in sporadic tree damage (not widespread), a few power outages, and a tornado. The tornado was in Clinton, MO, and destroyed a warehouse and damaged other structures on the south side of the city. No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.

Flooding is an issue this morning for some Ozark communities. Wednesday’s storms produced heavy rainfall of over 3″ for areas north of Springfield! This has caused some roads to be impassable due to high water. Check the latest road conditions using the MoDOT Traveller Information Map.

Today will be largely quiet, but there will be a storm or two southeast of Springfield after 3 PM. Storms may produce some wind and hail, and the tornado risk is very low.

Tonight into Friday is quiet. Friday afternoon will be in the low 80s under partly cloudy skies. Late Friday afternoon, sometime after 4 PM, thunderstorms will start to fire near a cold front in Kansas.

These storms will move into Western Missouri during the evening. Damaging wind gusts of 70 mph and quarter-sized hail are the main hazards. A spinup tornado or two will also be very possible within the storm line Friday evening/night.

The severe threat fades overnight Friday, and storms will exit early on Saturday morning. Flooding could be a problem for areas north of I-44 by Saturday morning, given that’s where the heaviest rain has fallen recently.

Saturday and Sunday will be nice days for the weekend. A little soggy on Saturday, but skies will clear away for the afternoon. It’ll be cooler too behind the cold front on Saturday with temperatures likely in the 50s. We dip into the upper 30s Saturday night, and Sunday will climb into the 60s.

Next week begins mild with temperatures in the 70s for several days. We begin dry, too, but rain and storm chances increase towards the end of the week…
