An Arizona appeals court last week upheld the manslaughter conviction of a man who fatally shot another driver during a Chandler road-rage confrontation but ordered him resentenced because the trial judge relied on an artificial-intelligence recreation of the victim speaking at sentencing.
The court on Sept. 30 ruled that the AI-generated depiction of Christopher Pelkey crossed the line between permissible victim-impact evidence and unreliable information that made Gabriel Paul Horcasitas’ sentencing fundamentally unfair.
