Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders orders flags to half-staff in honor of Little Rock Nine member Thelma Mothershed-Wair

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags in Arkansas to be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of Little Rock Nine member Thelma Mothershed-Wair’s passing.

Mothershed-Wair is one of the nine Black students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. She went on to graduate high school and later received a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

She has received accolades for the role she played in the public school system, including the Congressional Gold Medal presented by former President Bill Clinton.

Family members announced earlier this week that Mothershed-Wair died Saturday, Oct. 19.

Arkansas leaders have spoken about her courage and the impact her legacy has left on civil rights and the education system nationally.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church.
