Heading into the Super Bowl with game watching parties and large gatherings can be a lot of fun. Maybe you will use sour cream to make dip for chips and veggies, perhaps you may create a cheese board to feed folks during the big game or maybe you will keep it all to yourself in any case we are asking you to check your freezers and refrigerators closely paying attention to your cheese, sour cream and yogurts because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The CDC reports approximately 260 people die each year from Listeria, which is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
